About OCD

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder characterised by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions). Individuals with OCD experience persistent, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause significant distress and anxiety. These obsessions are often accompanied by compulsive behaviours, which are repetitive actions performed to reduce the anxiety associated with the obsessions.

While compulsions may provide temporary relief, they are ultimately maladaptive and can significantly interfere with daily functioning. Individuals with OCD often recognise their obsessions and compulsions as irrational, but they feel unable to control them.

It’s important to note that OCD is a complex disorder with a range of presentations. The severity and specific content of obsessions and compulsions can vary widely.
